The History Behind Tennis

You will find 2 events that create tennis’s history. The crucial creation of rubber which transformed lawn tennis into today’s tennis, and the match between Billy and Bobby which opened the doors for women to be included in a man’s sport.

The true history of tennis doesn’t start until around 1850, once the first “modern” tennis balls were invented and employed. Before this point, the history of tennis is the history of a different game.

The original tenis is played in indoor courts. In reality, original tenis cannot possibly be played outside – the players use angled walls of a proper tenis court to deliberately hit and return the ball with their opponents. Yes, original tenis is akin to today’s modern tenis, or even “lawn tenis, ” but only in the same way that handball, badminton, croquet, and racquetball are just like lawn tenis!

tenis as we recognize it today is called “lawn tenis, ” and it did not diverge coming from real tenis until around the 1850’s. It was inside the 1850’s that Charles Goodyear, of Goodyear tire fame, devised vulcanized rubber. Vulcanized rubber is a process that prevents normal rubber from deteriorating quickly (without the vulcanization course of action, natural rubber could deteriorate within a very few days. )

So, using the vulcanization of rubber came ubber tenis balls. The rubber tenis balls could now be used outdoors on garden courts. These rubber tenis balls were an excellent change from the wads of wool, hair, wool, or cork wrapped with leather or string and cloth – these are what had been included in original tenis.

And because these vulcanized rubber tenis balls may just be used outdoors, on garden courts, without walls to bounce them away from, new rules had to be invented for this brand new game of lawn tenis.

Walter Clopton Wingfield is usually the man who is given credit for the invention of modern tenis, or even lawn tenis. Around 1874, Wingfield actually patented the game. And the game became loved by the leisured classes during the entire end of the 1800s.

The actual popularity of tenis multiplied relatively quickly. tenis clubs were created around this time. The first tenis championships were held in 1877 iat Wimbledon. a precursor for the Grand Slam tournament held in Wimbledon annually, even today.

The rules of tenis changed gradually during the entire later 1800s, changing the shape with the court and the length of net and in that way changing the history of tenis in the process!

Now, the history of tenis for women is usually said to have commenced after Billie Jean King’s defeat of Bobby Riggs with 1973. Yes, women had been playing tenis for several years before this defeat — in reality, a woman, Mary Ewing Outerbridge, is credited with introducing lawn tenis for the states. And yes, women had even also been playing professionally — King did earn money playing tenis, but far lower than any male player of similar stature.

But it was not until King, a woman, handedly defeated Riggs, that women in 1973 actually gained respect in the game. This defeat is what truly paved the way for more recent tenis greats just like Steffi Graff and Serena as well as Venus Williams.
