Social Work – It is All about Helping People

Social work practice has focused on meeting human needs and developing human potential. It addresses the barriers, inequities and injustices that exist in society. Its mission is to help people to develop their full potential, enrich their lives, and prevent dysfunction.

Social work is not just about doing good deeds and helping the under-privileged. It has evolved into a profession over a period of time. It has become a vital need of our society today with issues of disability, drug misuse, poverty, mental ill health, problems associated with aging etc. rising constantly.

In the last few decades social work has emerged as one of the most demanding profession in India. If you are willing to work hard and in any given conditions, both Government and Non-Government Organizations (NGOs) have a lot to offer. International organizations too are socially aware and hence a number of opportunities are available in international societal work. Industrial and commercial units too are looking to hire social workers. For the millions of Indian youth, a degree or diploma in social work is creating a large number opportunities in various sectors.

Professional social work India activists are found in every facet of community life; such as in old age homes, orphanages, schools, hospitals, mental health clinics, prisons, corporations and in numerous public and private agencies that serve individuals and families in need.

Social work India activists help people to overcome some of life’s most difficult challenges: poverty, discrimination, abuse, addiction, physical illness, divorce, loss, unemployment, educational problems, disability, and mental illness. They help prevent crises and counsel individuals, families, and communities to cope more effectively with the stresses of everyday life.

As an Indian, the moment you start thinking about all the problems facing this country and seeking solutions to those problems, you’re bound to arrive at no easy or direct answers. In fact, you don’t really need to get into a pensive mode for this. Daily ordeals and challenges in and around your environment give you more than enough fodder to rant and complain about the Government, poverty, corruption, education system, literacy, migration, discrimination etc. Being a country of a billion plus, we have the advantage of motioning change by our collective voice and action. Unfortunately, being a country of billion plus leads to a diffusion of responsibility more often than the former.

Halabol has taken initiative to create awareness among countrymen and women, especially the youth, today about their responsibilities for the society. Halabol were the Social Activity Partners for Delhi Technological University’s 2-day event around the theme of ‘Student Social Responsibility’ and were responsible for managing the set up of the stalls and performances for and by the non-profit organizations and socially active art/drama groups, respectively. This is a great way to motivate the youth to do some good deeds for the society. Doing good deeds for society is not a sole responsibility of professional social workers. Anyone can do good things for society. So we should promise ourselves to do some good deeds for society to make it a better place to live.
