Guns and 3D printing

There are countries where possession of arm is restricted to those who have license for it and there are countries where possession of arms is totally legal. Who may possess arms or what regulations should be implemented pertaining to possession of arm is a debatable point. However, a more serious concern is the use and possession of arms manufacturing devices. It may seem fictitious but with the advancements in 3D printing technology, it may be a reality in the near future.

As of now, the production of guns, whether at home or in the factory, is quite an expensive task and hence, cannot be undertaken by everyone. However, 3D printing is the method of creating real objects through the information fed in the computer. A 3D printer is able to interpret the input data and then transform it into an object by using materials that is fed to it. Besides, this technology is on the rapid course of advancement and may soon be able to use any material and produce anything. It may become a favourite of criminals among others.

Reports reveal that lower receiver of AR-15 has already been produced by 3D printers. The person who made it attached other components to it. Although, a complete product was not produced in this case, it is a considerable forward step towards production of arms at confort of one’s house.

Defensive Distributed has ambitiously taken the task of producing arms with the help of 3D printers which would, for the sake of law, not to be sold. Although resin, used in 3D printing, is too weak a substance to withstand the energy that gets released by a gun-shot, the possibility to create arms poses a threat to 3D printers. The use and availability of 3D printers may be restricted in future or its possession may require license.

As of now, the 3D printers use materials that are too weak to be used for arms and hence, both the technology and people are safe. However, the scope of utility that this technology has as well as the pace at which advancements are taking place, some regulation are ought to be made and implemented. 3D printing has the potential to change the life of people and that of the production industry. However, if its availability and use are not checked in future, it may become its downside. It is be better to be on alert than to be sorry.
