Cleaning the Salt Off Your Car
Winter driving conditions often include more than just snow and ice. Areas with snow and ice usually also have to deal with salt spread on roads by salt trucks to prevent slippery conditions. While the salt is good for the road, it isn’t good for your car.
Your car probably needs a good washing, but that isn’t easy to do in the winter – your hose is probably frozen. One option would be spending money for a car wash. Another option is to do it yourself with this handy method.
You need a warmer day, when temperatures are at least 35. You also need an inexpensive bottle of baby shampoo – without conditioners or other additives. You will also need 2 buckets of warm water and a washing mitt.
You will want to dress for the occasion. If it’s cold, bundle up, but know that you may get wet. Wear old grungy clothes in case you get dirty, and waterproof boots. Prepare yourself, head to toe.
Now that you are ready, assemble your supplies and put them near your car. Fill both buckets nearly full with warm water. Don’t use hot water or the extreme temperature change could crack your car’s finish. Add a couple squirts of baby shampoo to one bucket, and swish the water around with the mitt to mix it up.
Start by dusting off any snow on your car. Now, quickly brush the warm washing mitt full of baby shampoo water all over your car using very little pressure; just swipe and dip. Use the mitt all over your car so you can see what your car really looks like again.
Now that the washing is done, take the second bucket of clean water and splash it all over your car to rinse it – starting with the roof again. You may get wet if you’re not careful. After your rinsing is complete, put everything away and go warm up in dry clothes inside.
