Proxy Access through a Firewall
Not every organization configures their firewall to block all the datagrams destined for all unknown protocol ports. In many cases where a secured firewall is required to prevent the unwanted access then users on the inside needs a safe mechanism which provides access to the service outside the network. This mechanism forms the second major piece of the firewall architecture. In general an organization can only provide the safe access to the outside services to the secured computer which in turn provides the customers with all the data server outlets which combines the secured computer network connections with the ones which are gateways of the main serverlet of the firewall. Since the computer gateways must be strongly fortified to serve as the communication channel, its often called as the bastion host. Here the bastion host provides the secured access to the outside services without requiring an organization to admit the datagrams with arbitrary destinations.
Basically, the firewall has two conceptual barriers. The outer barrier blocks all incoming traffic except the ones which datagrams are destined for services on the bastion host that organization chooses to make available externally and the datagrams destined for the clients on the bastion host. The inner barrier blocks the incoming traffic except the datagrams which originate on the bastion host. The inner barrier blocks the incoming traffic except the datagrams which are originated on the bastion host. Most of the firewall includes a manual bypass which enables the managers to temporarily manage the bastion host which manages the traffic from the source to the destination.
For understanding on how the bastion host operates, let’s consider a web access as the firewall prevents the user’s computer from receiving the incoming datagrams due to which the users cannot use the browser for the direct data access. Instead the data organizations tend to arrange a proxy which depends on the bastion host which then capitalizes on the NAT which is the network address translation unit which then pages on the specified unit size than a complete set of IP addrsses.
