Virtual Private Server versus Dedicated Server

Virtual Private Servers allow hardware to run at a comparatively high utilisation rate. They have lesser power costs as compared to a single physical server (like in case of a Dedicated Server) and hence are cheaper. The maintenance of Virtual Private Servers, or VPSs are though more expensive as it is difficult to patch all virtual servers that are running different operating systems on different physical servers that need separate maintenance. The maintenance part on higher operating systems should be done expediently to make the maintenance time as low as possible.

Creating the backup of single arbitrary software is quite difficult. In case of VPS providers, the security issues are bit complex as compared to dedicated server providers. Security can be disintegrated into two layers, physical server security and VPS security. Also, the monitoring of VPS is little more difficult in comparison the dedicated server monitoring. VPS usually requires more costly drivers like multi-port network adapters and more physical connection, when compared to dedicated server. The use of more Ethernet cables and network equipments such as routers and switches, can also post some management problems. VPS providers usually need more IP addresses than dedicated providers. The physical system that runs VPS largely can have huge number packets per second through network. It is hard to manage large number of IP addresses, MAC addresses, etc.

VPS though also offers software licensing benefits, as some of the software licenses are based on the number of physical processors and can thus be cheaper when you divide the price by the number of VPS on one physical processor. The performance of VPSs has also been quite good these days, with less than 5% overhead costs on the modern software such as Virtuozzo. However, the disk input/output performance can have some bottlenecks owing to more disk fragmentation.
