Maintaining Your Floor
There are several important keys that will help you keep your new floors looking new for longer. All types of flooring degrade over time, but you can help slow down that process by proactively taking care of problems before they occur. You might be surprised to know that this does not generally require a lot of extra work. In fact, once you get on a fairly regular schedule, each of these tasks can be completed very quickly. Here are a few things to keep in mind no matter what type of floor you are maintaining.
Don’t wait until it “Needs It”:
If you wait to sweep or vacuum until the floor clearly needs it then you are waiting too long. You are giving the dirt and grime extra time to work its way into the flooring where it can potentially cause damage. Given time, the dirt will work its way into the padding of your carpet, between the boards of your hardwood, or into the grout between your tiles where it can settle in and cause damage or discoloration. If you make a habit of vacuuming or sweeping before it is “needed” you will find that you can finish more quickly than if you had waited.
Clean Spills Quickly:
This one is a little more obvious. Anytime something is spilled, it can cause serious damage if it is not cleaned quickly. Obviously if a glass of red wine or grape juice is spilled you want to clean that up right away to avoid staining, but whether you spilled a glass of water or your pet made a mess, it is important to clean it up immediately.
Deep Clean:
Whether you rent a machine, pay someone to do it for you, or buy your own equipment, it is a good idea to do a periodic deep clean of your flooring. This will get out any dirt and grime that escaped your previous cleaning efforts and make your floor look brand new once again. It does not need to be done very often, I recommend about once a year.
Misc:
There are other minor details you can keep in mind and be proactive about. Keeping your pets’ claws trimmed will reduce scratching any hardwood floors. Perhaps it would be good idea to institute a “no shoes in the house” policy. That will not only reduce scratching but will very definitely decrease the amount of dirt and grime tracked in. This is an especially good idea if you live in a region where it is easy to track in snow or mud.
Keep on top of it:
Most importantly, keeping on top of the maintenance of your flooring will help keep it from getting out of control. Being proactive will help prevent problems from occurring and jumping on top of a problem as it arises will help keep it from turning into a much bigger problem than it really needed to be. If you keep these principles in mind and implement them into your cleaning schedule, then you will be able to enjoy your flooring much longer than you might have otherwise.
One really popular type of flooring is bamboo flooring. Be sure to learn about bamboo flooring as well as woven bamboo floors.
