Gift giving should be from the heart and not from the wallet

So many people these days are feeling rushed and confined by their everyday lives, which ends up translating to not taking care of those around them when they need to be shown they are appreciated. For every holiday, birthday, anniversary, baby born, work accomplishments, school graduations, or any other achievement a person reaches should be celebrated with a thought out and creative gift straight from your heart. This does not mean draining your budget, but coming up with something meaningful that is wrapped or packaged in boxes or gift bags that show the meaning of the event you are commemorating.

Giving a gift that means something or can be used by the person you are giving it to is going to be much more appreciated than a generic gift card to a store you may or may not know they shop at. Getting or making something that they cannot put a price tag on is going to make them feel much more special than knowing exactly how much you spent on a little piece of plastic for them to essentially pick out their own gift for themselves and save you the trouble. If you end up going the route of getting them a gift card you are risking them feeling disengaged and not as valued as you want them to. Take the time to really think about what you want to give them, what they can use the most, or make them something so special they will feel like you really care about them and the occasion you are celebrating.

One of the best things about gifts are the wrappings they are given in. Paper bags can be transformed in to almost anything you or the receiver would want. You can have them match the theme of the party you are attending, like a children’s birthday party. You can paint or stamp their favorite cartoon character on it that will match the wrapping paper everyone else will get them, or the cake, or just the colors of the balloons they are going to have. For a family that is welcoming a new addition, you can paint it pink or blue depending upon what bundle of joy they received. For a work anniversary or a college graduation, you can stamp “Congratulations on 10 years of valued service!” or “Congratulations, Graduate! Now on to the real world!” or any variation of those themes on the paper bags you purchase to create a great presentation. It will give your gift a sense of familiarity and a special touch that will show them how much you really appreciate them.

It is a proven fact that homemade gifts are more appreciated than manufactured and impersonal presents. Not only are they better to give because they make the recipient feel more special, but they are also easier on your wallet. Not to say you won’t spend more for someone you care for, but with the amount you like to give, the less you can spend and the more you can contribute is the best way. Better to give several small gifts that mean the world to the person you are giving them to.
