The Good The Bad and The Ugly

Referred to as the next logical step in the world of research, ebooks have all but taken over from the typically traditional hard copy books. An ebook is generally an electronic version of a paper book. There have been issues as to the exact definition of the ebook, and as to its value over the traditionally reliable paper book, but for years past and some to come, there is little chance of getting to common ground.

Free ebooks are priceless based solely on the fact that they provide a toll free avenue for massive levels of research. Toll free in the sense that one can get material without incurring the cost of buying or traveling to a place to access particular information. This points to convenience in terms of time and money saved. It also provides a limitless source of information.

With Google and the constant influx of information, the expanse of free ebooks service providers has been exponential. Note, though, that free ebooks, and ebooks in general have just as many strengths as they do weaknesses.

Strengths

They are FREE! You just need access to the web and you’re good. No taxes, no shipping cost and you don’t have to worry about them getting dog eared. Some of these books are available in audio and visual files, this, for people who aren’t too crazy about reading. They all have a search feature that allows you to find exactly what you’re looking for without having to reed the whole book. A change in facts can be updated by simply editing the relevant places. Oh, and another thing, they’re FREE!

Weaknesses

Its plain torturous to sit on a screen all day to read something, I mean, who wants that? Most people opt to print it out, but then sometimes its thousands of pages, now that’s another problem. Then comes the all too famous problem of plagiarism, someone can quite easily copy your work and email it to friends. Then what if you don’t have electricity or a data enabled phone? What then?

Ebooks are a very good addition to the world of research. Although, when compared to the traditional hard cover books, which had specified formats, and are a tangible source of information, ebooks, free or otherwise, seem like nothing more than a series of 1’s and 0’s. Free ebooks can thus, be lost just as easily as they were found.
