New Mahindra Xylo v/s Tata Safari Storme

The 2012 Auto Expo saw the unveiling of New Safari as ‘Tata Safari Storme’ along with one vehicle that went completely missing the scene was the 2012 version of Mahindra Xylo. Out of the two, New Mahindra Xylo has already hit the showrooms, while Tata Storme is expected to be available by March-end or soon after the start of financial year 2012-13 that begins in April. Both the vehicles are from the prominent and most reliable stables of Mahindra and Tata, and the homegrown pair of auto giants have always delivered much-more than the expected. After the launch of Storme, the competition will be such that it will evidently set Utility Vehicle (UV) segment on fire as none has got the ‘defeat’ ingredient in their DNA.

Tata Safari Storme displays an all new face of ‘Safari’ regime, while the successful Xylo has now got an enough bold look that can take on any SUV or MUV in the segment. The headlights are new in both the vehicles with Tata choosing to go with the inspiration from Range Rover and Mahindra opts to get motivated by its hot-selling Mahindra XUV 500. There are new styling cues on the bonnet along with new front & rear bumper. The Storme has got more of chrome inserts on the fascia that emerge incomparable, although Xylo has very less of it, which can be a decisive factor for those who prefer looks. But the entry and exit part from the door seems a bit congested in the Tata Storme in comparison to convenient in New Xylo with bigger doors.

The cabin ambience of the Tata Safari has improved by leaps-n-bounds, while a bit of luxury is sensed in the Xylo interiors as they were well managed in the earlier version as well. The instrument cluster is more refined and much advanced in Tata Safari Storme against 2012 Xylo. The seating positions and comfort level as far as the space is concerned is much more in Xylo, as it promises with its slogan of ‘every occupant is a king’. Some of the other handy features that include cubby holes, arm rest and many other are similar to each other, but still a bit more in Storme, while the AC vents for individual cooling perform better duty in 2012 Xylo than next generation Safari.

The safety features will no doubt be more in Tata Safari Storme as Tata promotes it as true off-roader with adequate safety measures, while New Mahindra Xylo is generally focused on urban commuting and long highway runs.

The Storme will be powered by a refined 2179cc, DiCOR; on the other hand New Xylo comes in variety of two powerful engines namely mEagle and new entrant Scorpio fame 2.2L mHawk. The 2.2 DiCOR will generate around 140bhp and 320Nm and is expected to come in a single variant. While the older 2.5L mEagle that is at hand with different power tunes of 95bhp and 112bhp, now comes teamed up with mHawk 2.2L, 120bhp and 280Nm. Nevertheless, Tata Storme is till now hoped of a single variant, but still there are possibilities of it coming with a 4X4 and 4X2 mechanism along with Automatic Transmission (AT), all these go omitted in New Xylo. On mileage part with three engine trims New Xylo delivers some amazing ARAI certified figures that range between 13-14.95 kmpl, meanwhile 2.2 DiCOR of Safari might not stay in competition as far as fuel economy is concerned.
