Android surpasses 100K Apps: Does it really matter?

A recent announcement on the Android Dev Twitter account mentions that Android marketplace now has 100,000 apps. Should that be surprising? Not really. Is it important? Yes, it is. It marks the growth of the Android platform.

In July 2010, Google unveiled App Inventor for Android that opened up the development environment for novice developers. The growth hasn’t stopped ever since. Despite many arguments regarding a loose monitoring process, Google has focused on core strengths and continues to develop them. The factors responsible for the growth and success of the Android marketplace are:

Minimum investment high returns:

Unlike other platforms, Android entails minimum development costs. It has minimal licensing fees, which is almost a quarter of the cost of submitting an application to the App Store. Cost structure of Android application development can be split into development and testing expenses, royalty fees and testing devices costs.

Easier for new developers to break even:

Android Applications are written in Java, which is a trusted and robust language. As the language is popular with Application developers, it offers a great opportunity for faster business growth. Moreover, as mentioned earlier, with the introduction of the App Inventor it has become ever easier for the new developer to create innovative applications.

Variety of distribution mechanisms:

Android allows developers to distribute their applications in a number of ways. They can distribute it via third party stores that are mostly owned by Google or users can create distribution channels of their own and promote them.

Open Source platform:

Android is an open source platform and has minimal restrictions, which encourages competition. Developers can freely receive updates and provide feedback on it. In addition, the platform is ready for customization facilitating the monetization of applications for developers.

Indeed, Android apps are competing shoulder to shoulder with iPhone apps. They have the potential to command a significant market share and reach the top in future. What could be the next frontier for Google Android to achieve? Please post your opinions in the comments section below.
