The Perils of Dual Flush Toilets
A dual flush toilet handles liquid and solid waste differently than the way they are handled in toilets in the US. They provide the user with a decision to make between two different flushes. It’s a toilet that has a design that is interactive which helps to conserve water and has become hugely popular very rapidly in nations such as Australia that have a short supply of water.
They are also gaining in popularity in locations where the treatment facilities are over burdened or old and in locations in the United States and North America where droughts have caused water to be in short supply. It only makes good sense to use less water to flush liquid waste. However, in the US they are not quite as popular because there seems to be a difference of opinions when it comes to personal decisions with regard to waste management.
For a long time now, flush toilets were necessities that took care of our need to eliminate waste materials. Bodily waste is a problem because the topic is so delicate that our society can be as much a factor in causing change as is necessity. The words we use, such as pee, poop, and defecate aren’t acceptable in any conversation that is considered polite. Our culture keeps the talk about our bodily functions quiet and therefore any changes in the way we handle it may create resistance and culture shock.
Long ago when the family outhouse was the way we eliminated bodily waste the head of the household depended on its familiar and safe use. If you consider the reaction that people had the outhouse had when it was moved indoors it’s amazing that it ever made the move. The outhouse was probably seen as the more sanitary way to manage the elimination of your bodily waste as opposed to moving it into your house. However, the outhouse still found itself in our houses.
Dual flush toilets are another defining moment associated with the development of the toilet. It introduces water conservation into the process of the elimination of body waste. The popularity of the dual flush and low flow toilet is increasing in the US partially as a result of the increased cost of water and the increase in regulation by the government. These reasons, so far, are providing the only for changing the way we eliminate body waste. However, in this case change is a good thing. Perhaps we can all come together to help the US flush more responsibly.
