How To Replace The Sink And Faucet In The Bathroom
Although it is somewhat of a tedious task, replacing the bathroom sink and faucet is quite easy. The most important thing to do before you start with this is to settle upon the sort of sink and faucet you want. While you can just pick one that is the same as your old one, it is better to upgrade.
First of all, take measurements of the old sink so you can get a new one of roughly the same size. Measure only the space allotted for the sink to make sure the new one will fit if you’re going for not just a new bowl but also a whole new base.
When you buy a new sink with the base, you will be given a kit that will help you replace the base. You can always buy one in the local hardware store if you don’t have it as it quite cheap. Make sure you have a basin wrench, adjustable wrenches, slip joint pliers and a scouring pad as well.
The water lines to the old sink must be turned off using the valves present beneath the sink. Alternatively, shut off the home’s main line. Then remove most of the remaining water in the pipes by turning the faucet on.
Next step is to disconnect the faucet and the cold and hot water supply lines to it. Do this with a wrench and use a bucket to drain the remaining water from the pipe. A towel will be useful to wipe any spilled water. The drain line (going through the floor/wall) then has also to be disconnected and this is done by loosening the nut that connects it to the basin.
Now comes the part where you have to remove the whole old sink including its base. You can leave the old faucet attached to the sink or remove it if you want. A knife can be used to cut any caulking that may be present. If the base was caulked to the floor, you have to scrape the remaining caulk with the scouring pad.
Follow the instructions with the new sink to install it. If the faucet has washers, make sure these and other gaskets are placed properly or you will have a leak later. The faucet can also be caulked to the new sink for additional waterproofing.
The last thing to do is connect to the new faucet the hot and cold-water supply pipes as well as the drain line. After doing this, turn the mains on then see test to see that there are no leaks and that everything is working the way it should be.
