To make this possible for automated routing algorithms to distinguish among the autonomous systems, each one is assigned with the autonomous system number by the central authority which is charged with the assignment of all internet addresses. When the routers in the two autonomous systems exchange the routing information the protocol arranges for messages to carry the autonomous systems of the system which each router represents. Some of the routing protocols are basically used to determine the routing paths within the automated system while others are used to interconnect the set of the autonomous systems.
Also the hosting protocols are determined by using the techniques which are employed in the configuration of the autonomous system of IP routing.
