Book Overview: Discover The Perfect Career For You Through Personality Type – Do What You Are

Different individuals like doing things differently and behave in different ways. Some people like being outdoors, while others desire staying indoors and reading a great book. One person might get pleasure from social gatherings and mingling with a number of folks, whereas another may like more intimate settings like having dinner with 1-2 special friends.

One approach to describe and perceive these differences is through the concept of Personality. The MBTI is a well-known assessment for insights into personality, which is based on the work of psychiatrist Carl Jung. According to the MBTI, a person’s personality might be described by their preferences within the 4 areas given below:

Favourite world: Do you favor to focus on the outer world or on your own internal world? This is known as Extraversion (E) vs. Introversion (I).

Info: Do you like to focus on the essential data you take in through your senses and focus on the present or do you favor to interpret and add possibilities? This is referred to as Sensing (S) vs. Intuition (N).

Decisions: When making choices, do you favor to first have a look at logic and consistency or first take a look at the people, feelings/emotions involved and special circumstances? This is referred to as Thinking (T) vs. Feeling (F).

Structure: In coping with the outside world, do you favor to get things decided or do you prefer to remain open to new data and choices till the last moment? This iscalled Judging (J) vs. Perceiving (P).

Based on your preferences for each area, you’ll have a certain personality type, which is represented by 4 letters such as ENTJ. Each personality type is different and has different behaviours, strengths, weaknesses, likes, dislikes and so on.

Different personalities are additionally suited for different careers. If you are questioning what careers are best for you, based mostly on your persona, then “Do What You Are” is an effective book for that.

Broadly, the book covers the following topics/structure:

1) Explaining the different types of personalities (based on the MBTI)

2) Taking you thru some tasks to reach your personality type

3) Explaining each personality type in detail, along with strengths, weaknesses, typical career matches and a few case studies of profession choice/change

While it’s a good book and I do advocate shopping for it, there are a few points to note:

The book covers just one facet of profession selection and decision making. Due to this fact it is not comprehensive and does not bear in mind other areas such as interests, skills, values, goals, constraints and so on

It is not a hundred% certain that you’ll arrive at an accurate personality type via the book. So do not take every little thing in there as if it is written in stone. If the material interests you and you wish to get into extra detail, then consider talking with a career advisor.
