Interior design, pine furniture and rural Somerset

A while back I was asked to go to Somerset, to design the interior of a old farmhouse, in a very rural setting. Farms are not a favorite place of mine, and I am much more at home in London, where my clients are all in reaching distance. Regardless it was likely to be a well paid job, so putting my misconceptions aside, I made up my mind to do the job as quickly as possible.

I carefully packed everything that I thought I would need. I assumed that I would be unable to purchase any additional items that I might need, such as drawing paper. My assumption of a rural village shop, was one of old charm, where a bell on the door, would summon the proprietors from deep within. The only produce on sale, would be local and my daily standard of living would be seen as luxurious. I packed everything that I would need, wellingtons, the tools of my trade, champagne, just the essentials and set off to face rural Somerset with some trepidation.

Having packed my drawing equipment ,and my wellingtons, I set off into the unknown to face rural Somerset and all it had to offer.

The farm was huge it was famous for selling Cheddar cheese on the Internet, I did not realize there would be cows there, and my first step out of my car, had me getting my foot stuck in a huge cow pat. The cows seemed to find this funny as they all joined in a mooing chorus, of ‘ Here is the Pratt from the big city’

I stepped out of the car straight into a ‘present’ left by the cows. This seemed to coincide with the cows mooing, which sounded a lot like laughter.

The inside of the house really did need sorting. I set to work looking around and taking in the owners current tastes. The farmhouse really needed taking into this century. A rural theme was very important and as the kitchen was the hub of this house, I decided a large farmhouse table would be a lovely center piece. In some of the other rooms I placed some lovely items of pine furniture such as pine chest of drawers and small wardrobes.

The farmhouse desperately needed modern colors, and as I set to work modernizing the dingy rooms, I felt relief that the owners hadn’t had their own way. I knew if they had it would have been drab greens and browns. As I left another successful job I felt the eyes of the cows watching me and what sounded like the equivalent of laughter.
