Why a Text Based Logo is easy to Remember

Corporate Logos are your identity. They are the way your company is remembered by your customers and prospective customers. Some logos are designs, like the Nike “swoosh” or the “target” of Target and are instantly recognizable without having to include the name while others might be more obscure. Which is why text based logos are often a better choice. Think Microsoft or Walmart for example, simple effective and easy to remember.

The key to a successful text logo is to make it unique and easy to recognize while keeping it still readable. There are millions of fonts out there to use and some are so wild that they may be too hard to read. Is that a lower case “l” or and upper case “I” for example. The font you choose should be a reflection of the business. If you are an antiques dealer and “Old English font may work better than Arial. A clothing store could use Harlow Solid font could work for a clean retro style. While an entertainment store could use Broadway or Playbill fonts.

Color is also important. Some colors work much better than others and you will have to consider all mediums the logo will be used on. For example a bright yellow lighted sign works great, but print a yellow logo on white letterhead or business cards and it just does not stand out like a red or blue color would. A lighter colored logo may require that the letters be outlined in black or some other darker contrasting color to make it easier to see against some backgrounds.

Another consideration is not only how it looks in 2D in print on letterhead, envelopes and business card, but also how it looks in 3D as a sign above your entrance. Can it be reproduced for channel box lighting so many businesses use or will you have to have to print it on a lighted panel instead.

A logo is important, it is your identity, but do not forget your core business model. If you fail at product selection or customer service a great logo will not help, but if you run a great business and mediocre logo will not hurt.
