Danish director Christian E. Christansen’s first Hollywood film is The Roommate, a psychological thriller starring Leighton Meester and Minka Kelly as Rebecca and Sara, respectively.
Sara, a girl moving to California from Midwest for college is assigned to a room in the dorm and she shares the room with a girl named Rebecca. She seems like a nice person and they hit it off quickly, discovering the things they have in common and they have so much fun. For Rebecca, Sara is the best friend and actually only friend and she cannot share her with others. Her selfish attempts at keeping Sara all to herself and isolating her from the others are justified in her eyes as protecting her best friend from the evil. However, things go way deeper as seen later in the film and Rebecca has her secrets and obsessions which lead to much bigger things.
The film is a psychological thriller exploring the state of mind of Rebecca and Sara. Funnily though, the character Sara is written as the nice girl who would not hurt people and Rebecca is the psycho; but probably because of Meester’s successful portrayal of Rebecca, how and why she evolved from the nice friend to the psychopath makes her character so relatable that the audience feels her need, her longing for the best friend. Her sick mind might not understand the extremeness of the measures she chooses to take, but the reasons are there for people who are willing to explore without putting an immediate tag as psycho!.
The film is predictable in most places and is very much like Single White Female, indeed, but Meester’s performance is worth seeing. The rest of the cast deliver good enough performances but Meester is the scene stealer in the end. It would satisfy people who just looks for some light thriller.
