Teachers and what sticks in my mind

My mother’s sisters were ahead of me at school by two years. They were clever, top of their class, goody two shoes. Nadine was head girl and Michelle was a prefect. In Grade 10 my Afrikaans teacher asked me “why can’t you be more like Nadine?” My cheeky reply “Because I have a different last name” resulted in me going to the principal. By Grade 12 my Afrikaans teacher had more than enough of me. She told me not to bother with my homework, to shut up in class and that I would never understand the language,Store Blog and could only hope for 44% for my end of year result. I showed her of course – I got 66% for Matric Afrikaans. Better still, we live in the Western Cape and I am more than language proficient in Afrikaans. I can understand what is being said around me, and when I listen to the news I hear it in my head in Afrikaans and understand it without having to translate it into English.
