Choosing the right Area Rugs

Rugs are so much more than something to put on the floor. For centuries, they were an art expression in the Near East, and countries like Turkey, Afghanistan, India and Pakistan produced breathtakingly beautiful rugs that are now part of many collections and museums. They were used as an important dowry element for unmarried daughters, and, especially where there were no banks, as a way of saving for the rainy days. Families used to have piles of rugs on the floor, one on top of another, to sit or sleep on, or to sell when the money was short.

Although rugs are still made in many places the old-fashioned way, by hand, on the looms, the technological innovations made it possible to mechanize this process and make rugs that are much cheaper and affordable to everyday homeowners. Traditionally made from natural materials like wool, cotton and silk, they are now made from a range of synthetic materials, or in combination of natural and man-made fibers.

The size

Rugs are homeowners’ way of bringing a touch of color and softness to the hard floor surface.  The better quality the floor is, the smaller rug should be. High quality wood floor is beautiful in itself, and, if it is part of the original home’s architecture, should be the highlight of the room. Adding a small wool rug under the coffee table, or in other parts of the room where they would be visible, would add a touch of class to any space and a touch of color to the monochromatic color scheme.

Large rugs, whether they are natural or synthetic, do a great job of covering the floor that is not distinguished. They can be almost from wall to wall, colorful or of one color, making the space look softer, warmer and more put together.

The color

Lighter colors make rooms look larger, but are difficult to clean and maintain. Natural beige color Berber carpet looks wonderful in both modern and classical rooms, but is not a good idea in high traffic areas, or areas where kids do their regular messes.

Colorful rugs make room come alive and cheerful and do not show dirt, but do make rooms smaller, albeit cozy and pleasant. They are great choice for libraries, living rooms and dens. Antique Bukhara carpets, with their soft reds and simple patterns, give distinction to a room of any style, and make an impression even if they are relatively small.

Natural vs. synthetic

Natural materials have proved to resist time, dirt and human use for centuries and it is not unheard of to see few hundred years old carpets still decorating people’s homes. But, such great quality carpets can be pricy. Synthetic materials are popular because of their reasonable price and ease of cleaning, but can cause allergic reactions, and are not as durable as natural materials. New blends of wool and man-made fabrics are gaining popularity because they combine the durability and ease of cleaning of both fibers.

Whether you opt for a piece of antique to put on your floor, or a cheap wall-to-wall synthetic rug, you will have to make sure it is regularly cleaned. Carpet pile tends to trap dirt, dust, mites, or even other insects, and if not regularly cleaned, can affect your family’s health. Let the professionals deal with it. They can do much more thorough job, much faster and with less fuss. If the rugs are smaller, they will pick them up and clean them on their premises. Look for a reputable rug cleaner in your area and check their references.
