Steve Daines: Businessman
Steve Daines, the businessman, is running for Montana’s lone Congressional seat bringing years of experience working for one of America’s largest companies followed by eleven years of working with a startup company that has now become the largest commercial employer in Bozeman. In running for Congress, Steve is highlighting the commonsense approach he took while working in the business world both in the United States and in Hong Kong and China, where he spent 6 years managing Asian operations for Procter & Gamble.
Unlike many of the politicians currently serving in Washington, Steve’s perspective on America’s position in the global marketplace comes from hands on experience in those markets. He has seen what works and what doesn’t when it comes to international trade and will apply that knowledge toward maximizing America’s competitive advantages where and whenever possible.
Gaining these advantages will require changes on two fronts; taxes and regulatory practices. American businesses are currently burdened with taxes on capital gains which are too high and corporate tax rates which must reduced. These reductions will enable businesses to reinvest revenues in their own growth, create new jobs, and compete effectively even when the competition is relying on sovereign government subsidies.
Regulatory practices in the U.S. are some of the most costly and burdensome in the world. The over-regulation of American businesses mandates that resources which could be directed toward growth and hiring instead be used to keep up and comply with a complex and difficult regulatory environment. For example, the Sarbanes-Oxley Act places the same types of regulatory burdens on small businesses as companies with revenues exceeding a billion dollars per year. This describes exactly the kind of burdensome regulations which must be simplified and streamlined.
America has everything it takes to compete in the global marketplace. We just need to unleash it by reducing corporate taxes and regulatory practices.
