Bill White on Volunteer Programs for the Intrepid Museum

The Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum is one of USA’s stellar historical, honorable and educational institutions. The mission of Intrepid is to Enliven Our Youth; Teach the Public and Accolade Our Heroes. As a cultural and instructive not-for-profit institution, the Museum is devoted to advancing the awareness and perception of services, science and history through its programming, exhibitions and collections.

Volunteers are an intrinsic part of the Museum. The volunteer force of the Intrepid work either for the public or remain behind the scenes. Volunteering is a display of dedication, commitment, and support for our troops and the importance of our nation’s history.

As a volunteer, you can choose to work in a variety of settings within Intrepid, America’s Legendary Warship. Volunteer positions are available at the Information Desk, Museum Services, Exhibits, and within Administrative Services. As an information desk volunteer, you will have to handle questions from the guests, either in person or via telephone or email. If you prefer direct contact with the museum guests, you can choose to help with the Museum Services. Here, you will be operating the theater, taking tickets and helping guests maneuver they way around. If you like to teach, you can train as a docent which will allow you the opportunity to provide accurate historical information and interpret the exhibits to the guests.

Volunteers can also help out in restoration of the Intrepid museum’s aircraft and exhibits collection. This may involve riveting, sanding and painting. You can also help out with the Administrative Services, such as typing, data entry, envelop stuffing, labeling, mailing, and filing. Or, if you prefer, you can help out as an education assistant, escorting children with their guided tours through the museum and monitoring them during the events.

Volunteers are highly valued at the Intrepid museum and are rewarded for their dedication in supporting the Intrepid and its history. The volunteer program at Intrepid offers many educational opportunities such as customer service training, monthly lecture series, docent training, and museum services training. As a volunteer you can receive discounts and access to other museums, uniforms, and perpetual free admission to the museum for you and a guest.

Intrepid volunteers also have the chance to earn special gifts as the Volunteer of the Month program. In addition, they have access to the Volunteer Ready Room. All volunteers get an invitation for two to the Volunteer Recognition Dinner which is held annually.
