Mohawk Industries – car wash wax manufacturer – train wash machine
Products
Mohawk Industries is a producer and distributor of residential and commercial flooring including carpet, ceramic and porcelain tile, hardwood, laminate and home textiles including area rugs. They also distribute resilient (vinyl) and vinyl composition tile (VCT) flooring through a partnership with Congoleum.
Brands
Mohawk does not sell directly to consumer but via a network of many stores including home centers and flooring retail stores. Some retailers choose to become “aligned” with a Mohawk brand. This means the store will carry Mohawk products but is not exclusively Mohawk. All of these “aligned” stores will have the same carpeting as other stores or home centers that carry Mohawk flooring but these products use different product names. Flooring stores tend to be locally owned and independent. Mohawk’s two primary alignments are Mohawk Floorscapes and ColorCenter stores. Other flooring stores may carry what’s called “open line” or “running line” stores including the brands Aladdin, Horizon and WundaWeve.
For the consumer who wants to comparison shop, it is extremely difficult since each type of store carries almost the exact same product but uses different names.
Mohawk is also the manufacturer of Karastan carpets including the Ralph Lauren brand of flooring. Since Karastan is considered the “high-end” line, Karastan avoids including the Mohawk name.
Commercial carpet
Mohawk sells carpet under the Mohawk Group. Brands in this group include:
Lees. Lees is a performance carpet and offers cutting-edge styling.
Bigelow. Bigelow carpets feature woven and tufted broadloom as well as modular designs at a value price.
Durkan. Durkan offers a comprehensive product line of inspired and expressive designs.
Ceramic and porcelain tile
Mohawk’s ceramic and porcelain tile line is sold under the Mohawk name. In addition, Dal-Tile and American Olean are subsidiaries of Mohawk Industries.
Hardwood
Mohawk’s hardwood line is sold under the Mohawk name. Much of it is products by the Columbia Flooring division, a hardwood manufacturer acquired by Mohawk in 2008..
Laminate
Mohawk’s laminate line is manufactured by Unilin, a company in Belgium and owned by Mohawk. Mohawk sells the laminate in the U.S. both under the Mohawk and QuickStep names.. Mohawk also has a partnership with the Quick-Step line of laminate flooring.
Home textiles
Mohawk sells bath rugs, area rugs, matelasse bedspreads, throws and decorative pillows under the Mohawk Home name.
Resilient and VCT
Mohawk distributes resilient sheet and VCT flooring through a partnership with Congoleum.
History
The company was founded by four brothers from the Shuttleworth family in 1878 in Amsterdam, NY. By 1908, the company was flooded with orders for its extremely popular carpet, Karnak. In the 1960’s the company began relocating its factories to the Southern U.S., beginning a rapid decline in the city.
The company has grown through a series of acquisitions through the years including the Aladdin carpet mill in Dalton, GA. Aladdin was the family business of current CEO Jeffrey S. Lorberbaum.
On April 26, 2006, the Supreme Court heard Mohawk Industries, Inc. v. Williams, which concerned what sort of corporations fell under the scope of RICO. Mohawk Industries had allegedly hired illegal aliens, in violation of RICO. The court was asked to decide whether or not Mohawk Industries, along with recruiting agencies, constitutes an ‘enterprise’ that can be prosecuted under RICO, but in June of that year dismissed the case and remanded it to Court of Appeals.
Mohawk Industries has actively partnered with the Carpet America Recovery Effort (CARE).
In August 2009, the Mohawk Residential division decided to prove its SmartStrand carpeting had significant durability and built-in stain resistance. To prove it, Mohawk carpeted the enclosure of a black rhinoceros at the Birmingham Zoo in Alabama. The rhino, known as Ricko the Rhino, lived on SmartStrand for two weeks while web cameras broadcast the experience live. Known as the SmartStrand Challenge, the results appeared on the site as well. Greenworks
Mohawk Industries celebrates its environmental friendliness under the trademark Greenworks. As a leader in the industry in sustainability, Mohawk is always at the forefront of new innovations in recycling and the use of renewable resources. Their Smartstrand fiber is partly composed of corn. Their Everstrand fiber is entirely composed of recycled plastic bottles. Mohawk uses over 1/3 of the recycled plastic bottles in the world to make their Everstrand Carpet. They replant 2.5 trees for every tree they cut down to make their hardwoods and laminates. The cores of their engineered woods and laminates are made with Southern Yellow Pine, a highly renewable fast-growing tree. Their adhesives are all formaldahyde free. Their ceramic tile fascilities are recycling most of the water that they intake, with two of them (El Paso, Gettysburg) reaching 100% water reuse.
Mohawk Industries and RICO Act
On April 26, 2006 the Supreme Court heard Mohawk Industries, Inc. v. Williams, which concerned what sort of corporations fell under the scope of the Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations Act (RICO). Mohawk Industries had allegedly hired illegal aliens, in violation of RICO. The court will decide whether or not Mohawk Industries, along with recruiting agencies, constitutes an ‘enterprise’ that can be prosecuted under RICO.
