Harpenden, A Town Of Hertfordshire, England
A population of over 30,000 plus a picturesque setting makes Harpenden Town in Hertfordshire, England as one of the most prosperous large settlements. The town is set within the district of St. Albans and is connected via a fast rail line to London. The train journey from the settlement to St. Pancras takes less than 30 minutes and there are direct links to Gatwick and London airports too.
It flourished during Victorian times, though the settlement has already been a settlement as far back as in Roman times. During the 19th century, the settlement was considered as one of the country’s straw-weaving capitals. It is also the home of the world’s oldest agricultural research center.
Another feature of the town is that the streets are named after literary greats such as Kipling Way, Tennyson Road, Byron Road and Shakespeare Road.
The settlement has numerous independent shops and cafes. It is also known for having ample green spaces, common areas and parks because of which, it is well-known for being family-friendly.
There are also a number of golf courses, bridle ways for those who enjoy riding horses, two cricket clubs, and rambling paths. The Harpenden Common, one of the golf clubs, is comprised of over 230 acres or land and was a recipient of the 2007 National Green Flag Award.
The community is home to many famous residents such as the footballer Lee Dixon of Arsenal, the famous film director Stanley Kubrick, famous golfer Ken Brown, and well-known composer Tim Rice, to name but a few.
Because of the quality of life in the township, property prices in the area are very high and are almost twice the national average. The settlement also has a football club. Harpenden Town Football Club, which was established in 1891. The club was the founding member of the 1898 Hets County League.
The land around the settlement still has Roman remains. An example of this is at the park located at Rothamsted. The community had grown out of the clearing of woodland by Westminster Abbey specifically within the Whaethamstead manor which had been granted in 1060 by Edward the Confessor. The oldest church in the area is the Church of Saint Nicholas which was originally built in 1217 as a chapel.
The town also has many resources for schools such as the Harpenden Common Nature Trail. The trail has a route that goes from the end of the settlement, Harpenden Common, and leads to a picnic site, St. John’s Wood and the Brickle Dells. This resource is designed for school children as part of their educational trips or outings. It gives children the opportunity to learn, explore and discover the natural wonders and the history of the Common.
