Don’t let it become a battle between you and the herve leger dress
“You used to not be able to walk through a in a purple herve leger dress jogging suit,” said Susan Jacoby, 54, who had lived in Las Vegas long enough to recall when gamblers wore suits and dresses downtown. Now, its cluster is a pedestrian festival of Coors-filled footballs, deep-fried Oreos and women paid to wear Carmen-Miranda-style get-ups.
In recent years, downtown boosters have aimed to spruce up Glitter Gulch, once the area’s nickname and now the moniker of a strip club. Entrepreneurs have opened bars and a hipster-magnet coffee shop, while have remodeled rooms and tried to market their gangland pasts.
Goodman has touted plans to lure visitors downtown with, among other things, a soon-to-open mob museum. Oops. Make that the National Museum of Organized Crime and Law Enforcement.
Panel members asked the women: What does Goodman mean to you?
“I’ve never personally used him as an attorney,” Jacoby replied. “I have friends who have.”
Another applicant, Jacqueline Jackson, said she adored the former mayor. A retired nurse, she had met him at a Boys & Girls Club event years ago.
She told the panel Goodman noticed her spunk and advised her, “Never let anyone stop you red herve leger dress unless it’s the cops.”
So when Jackson, 63, heard about the auditions, she was determined to work as “a hostess for Oscar.”
But because she had attended a Thanksgiving-themed party beforehand, she arrived wearing a pink dress and a flowered bonnet.
But the Globes’ fashion mood has recently shifted. Nominees like Nicole Kidman, Halle Berry, Jennifer Aniston, Charlize Theron, Salma Hayek, Cate Blanchett and Reese Witherspoon have upped the designer quotient with made-to-measure gowns by renowned couturiers Valentino, Yves St. Laurent, Chanel, Gucci, Nina Ricci, Dior, Armani Prive and Atelier Versace.
The Globes have now become a critical stop in an Oscar hopeful’s campaign for fashion glory: You have to dress like an Oscar winner to become an Oscar winner. This is why the 2012 Globes carpet will feature the latest runway trends — white, pretty pastel and sorbet hues, fun floral prints, feminine taffeta, tulle, chiffon and lace gowns, demure sleek ’20s flapper silhouettes — and more statement-making couture from A-list designers than you can shake a stiletto at.
If that doesn’t suit you, a lot of women will go with a more subdued dress and then show off a great shoe, so the dress is the canvas and the accessories become the focal point.
Madonna’s hair stylist and the owner of the Andy Lecompte salon in West Hollywood breaks out the accessories to get into the holiday spirit. His favorites include a gray velvet bow tie and a shiny purple necktie, both from Lanvin, and sparkly purple socks from Comme des Garçons.
“And don’t forget about your undergarments, because you need the proper undergarment so you won’t be pulling or tuging at the dress all night long,” Andrews says. “Don’t let it become a battle between you and the dress.
