Web Designing Fundamentals to Look Out For
Web designing has come a long way; nowadays websites aren’t just text based static pages. Web 2.0 websites are elegant and highly interactive, providing rich multimedia experience to visitors. With the integration of technologies like Flash, Silverlight and HTML 5 the evolution of web designing has just started.
Most websites are developed using languages like HTML/CSS, PHP, ASP, Java, Perl etc yet some websites outshine others. So what is it that makes certain websites stand out from the rest? Is it only the web designer’s skill and creativity or does the answers lie with some fundamental elements of designing?
Talking about fundamental elements of web designing, there are 5 elements:
- Layout
- Images and Media
- Color Selection
- Lettering
- Styling
Layout: This serves as the foundation of any web design. Layout implies the placing of the different elements on the webpage such as images, buttons, videos, navigation, etc. The layout is something that you should plan before starting the actual work. Make a rough sketch on a piece of paper and talk about it with your client to find out whether they like the layout or not. Once you have settled on the layout start the actual work.
Images and Media: Slideshows, HD images, interactive flash, appealing videos and audio messages have become the norm of today’s websites. But just having a lot of rich media on a website doesn’t make it appealing rather the practical and judicious use of media should bring out the original purpose of the website and this is what separates good websites from great websites. Images and media should be used according to the theme of the website.
Color Selection: Color selection plays a major role in determining the visual appeal of a website. Each color has a meaning behind it; each color says something about the website. It is highly important that the theme of your website matches with the color to give it a visual appeal. For example the color pink is always associated with women; similarly red and yellow are used to attract attention especially in ads. Environment conscious sites always focus on using shades of green to highlight the “Go Green” mantra. Although there are no hard and fast rules but always make sure to use the appropriate color when web designing.
Lettering: Lettering or typography means selecting the right fonts of the right size and weight. Selecting the right set of fonts adds a great deal of appeal to your website. If you are using your site for professional use then make sure to use a font that complements the corporate image of your business.
Styling: It is the soul of any web designing project. Styling refers to the use of Stylesheet to add life to websites. With the arrival of HTML 5 and CSS3 stylesheets making great websites has become a lot easier.
