Wednesday’s first storm of the season left behind 10 centimetres of snow and turned Montreal’s morning commute into a slippery mess, a full three weeks before the snow-tire deadline. Police reported one serious accident in Côte des Neiges that may have been linked to road conditions.
The snow-tire law applies to about 4.5 million vehicles in the province, according to data provided by Transport Quebec. Larose said when it comes to road safety, it has had a significant effect over the past three years.
“We have noted an 18-per-cent reduction in the number of victims (of car crashes) during the period when snow tires are required,” she said. “You have to put that in context, because the number of victims has diminished by 13 per cent throughout the whole year, so what we’re seeing is that there has been a net improvement of five per cent during the obligatory snow-tire period.”
