A Fresh and spacious 21 st century art attraction

The Scottish National Portrait Gallery in Edinburgh is in the last stages of a ?18.6 million overhaul that will improve gallery area by about 60 % and boost annual visitor numbers from 200,000 to 300,000.

Developed by Architect, Sir Robert Rowand Anderson, the gallery was initial opened in 1889. Situated on a hill overlooking Edinburgh, the constructing cut really a swath with its grand, neo-gothic facades of red sandstone dwarfing the street below. But a hundred many years on and the gallery’s fortunes have altered significantly. Points became so poor that by the mid-1990s the gallery was on the brink of closure.

Some thing had to be done.

In 2009 renovation work began using the aim of the project to restore and reveal much of Anderson’s function inside the constructing and to show numerous much more works of art than had been previously on display. This has been achieved using the design of a bespoke 48-person capability hydraulically powered glass lift running by means of the core of the gallery. Lerch Bates has worked with Page/Park because the early design conception to bring a lift that’s not just functional when it comes to moving individuals and artifacts but, because it has 3 sides as well as the roof fully made from glass, also gives the best viewpoint because it moves gradually via the gallery.
