The Havelis of Mandawa in Rajasthan

India has been a heaven for tourists and art seekers. Rajasthan is one of the prime and foremost tourist places that people like to visit because of its traditional heritage. Mandawa is one such place in rajasthan which is famous for havelis. It is a town in Jhunjhunu district of Rajasthan, about 190 km from north of Jaipur. It is a part of Shekhawati region of india, known for havelis and baolis. Mandawa was a trading outpost for the ancient caravan routes that stopped here from China and the Middle East.

We visited mandawa fort and havelis some time back and stayed for three days. The experience of staying in a haveli converted in to hotel was awesome.

The fort of Mandawa was built by Thakur Nawal Singh, the ruler of Nawalgarh and Mandawa in the 18th century. It has painted arched gateway with Lord Krishna and his cows. The castle of Mandawa have beautiful frescoes. The rooms are decorated with Krishna’s paintings. The mirror and carving are fascinating. Darbar hall is decorated with amazing antique painting. Fort has now been converted in to Heritage Hotel.

The havelis are famous for fresco depicting the life history of God Rama and Krishna. Typically every haveli have two courtrooms, one outside for men and inner courtroom for ladies. These days however most of the havelis remain empty and are looked after by watchmen. Havelis are a major attraction to the tourist due to decoration and painting done on the walls and ceiling in the true Rajasthani colour. It is a photographer’s paradise. If you are lucky like me you might get to buy some amazing Belgium glass antique lamp shades over here.

Following are the most famous havelis
Hanuman Prasad Goenka Haveli
Goenka Double Haveli
Murmuria Haveli
Jhunjhunwala Haveli
Gulab Rai Ladia Haveli
