TO Slink named as Toshiba-Link, is an optical-fiber connecting system, which was initially manufactured by the company for its CD players. It quickly became the benchmark for many CD player businesses. But now the usage of TOSlink is not only restricted to CD players only. TOSlink is also used for car audio, office automation, navigation system, factory automation, etc. TOSlink is actually a transmission system for data, which uses optical signals instead of electronic signals. TOSlink is a lot more consistent as compared to electrical data transmission. This is because electromagnetic noise has no effect on the digital transmission of sound or data. It also does not produce any electromagnetic noise. TOSlink is made up of four components. Transmission module is one of the components that are used to convert electrical signals into the form of optical signals. The second component is receiving module, which converts optical signals into the form of electrical signals, the third component is optical fiber cable, which works just like the physical transmission line, and the fourth and last component is optical connectors, whose job is to join the transmission module and the receiving module to the optical fiber cable.

What a basic TO Slink cable uses is actually a 1 mm plastic optical fiber, which is very cheap. However, it depends on the necessary application and bandwidth. TOSLINK uses a good quality quartz glass optical fibers or multi strand plastic optical fibers. An Optical fiber cable is composed of two parts. The hub of the cable is called the core, and the second and the outer section is called the cladding. There are three types of Optical fibers, One of the type is All plastic fiber which is termed as ‘APF’, the second type is called Plastic cladding silica fiber, which is termed as ‘PCF’ and it is utilized for the data transmission between two short distances. The third and last type of Optical fiber is Silica fiber, which is used for the data transmission between long distances.

Most of the home theaters systems use TO Slink connections and Play back devices such as DVD players are also connected to audio receivers using TO Slink connectors. TO Slink is also used in car stereo systems. CD players, audio decoding, and Mp3 players are other fields that use this technology. Most of the sound engineers prefer to use TOSlink with their recorders to produce or capture useful audio data.
