Royal Enfield and Rolls Royce – Bike and Car With A Legacy of Their Own

Generally, India is considered as land of agriculture and its economy and the lives of the people are centred on it. In the recent past, Information Technology has been identified with India and its economy. Cars and bikes were never considered intrinsic with the people of India till recent past as early as the beginning of the twentieth century.. However, two of the most famous among the cars and the bikes, Rolls Royce and Royal Enfield had made their presence even during the latter part of the Nineteenth Century. They were considered to be a part of the royal entourage and were being used as transport by them. These were far and few with only privileged few having access to it and owned it.

The scenario now is entirely different with a stream of cars and bikes being available in the market. If we imagine the condition during the latter part of nineteenth Century, then it was the Rolls Royce and Royal Enfield which were synonymous with car and bike.

The most popular among the Royals was Rolls which was thus called and every royal family had at least three Rolls Royce with them. In earlier times, the Maharajas of India used these cars exclusively for their travel. Thus, Rolls Royce represented a status symbol and as such, was a must possession as far as royals of India were concerned.

Rolls Royce, on its part was a symbol of the status of Maharaja in the society and the number of Rolls Royce in his possession would identify his position. As a result, many times, the wives of the Maharaja used to travel in independent Rolls Royce and accompanied him in a procession of cars. The manufacturers thus tried to customize the Rolls Royce to the taste of the royalty. A classic example is the gold plated Rolls Royce owned by the Maharaja of Kashmir. Similarly, the Rolls Royce owned by noble laureate, Rabindranath Tagore is still preserved in the museum in Kolkata. These cars remind the people of the bygone era.

The Royal Enfield enjoyed the same privilege as Rolls Royce and it made its entry to India in 1898 with the UK based company selling its models, Bullet, Hornet and Fury which are in vogue even till date. The history of Royal Enfield was not as smooth as Rolls Royce. During the middle of the twentieth century, it faced a lock out and was on the verge of close down. However, it has been revived and is again available in the market. Royal Enfield is now being manufactured in India with the primary buyer being the Government. But, efforts are on their way to improve it and give competition to the Japanese models which are surging ahead in the Indian market in the bike segment.

The main factors contributing to popularity of both Rolls Royce and Royal Enfield are their reliability and stability. Both these brands are known for it and in spite of its absence from the main stream, they still create that awe among the onlookers if being driven on the road. They reveal the taste of the individual and his separate identity. These are still the first choice among persons who love vintage vehicles.
