Why do people wear high-viz clothing?

Most often, high viz vests and jackets are worn by workers where visibility even in low light situations is needed.  This type of gear is usually made of a highly reflective material in a bright color that makes the wearer stand out from the background.  Reflective striping or other designs are often included to make the wearer distinguishable from objects or signs on the road.

Many workers wear high viz clothing when there is poor lighting, fast moving traffic, or heavy machinery that is being operated nearby.  In the United States, a federal law passed in 2008 requires all highway workers to wear reflective clothing on the job.  Firefighters are also included under the law, unless they are wearing flame retardant gear while actively working on a fire or hazardous material situation.

In many parts of Europe, high viz clothing is required by law for all drivers.  Wearing a bright vest helps to increase the safety of drivers and passengers during car troubles or when they may have to exit the vehicle close to high speed traffic.  While repairing a flat tire, or doing any other work on the car, drivers are required to wear high viz clothing to reduce the risk of accidents.

High viz for Recreation:

In addition, many people wear high viz clothing during recreational activities.  Cyclists, hunters, hikers and pedestrians often wear brightly colored clothing to make themselves more conspicuous to others.

The styles and colors of high viz gear are endless.  They include:

  • Rain suits
  • Backpacks
  • T-Shirts
  • Jackets
  • Fleece
  • Laptop Bags

What to look for in High Viz Clothing:

There are two main features to look for when it comes to high-viz clothing. The first is the background material or fabric that the item is made from.  It is normally a florescent color, ranging from pink to yellow to orange made of polyester or goretex.  Bright colors help the garment to be much more visible and noticeable during the day.

The second feature of any high-viz garment is the reflective striping.  These bands are highly retroreflective and are arranged in a pattern that catches the eye when seen by car headlights.  These bands are essential for workers who use the clothing in poorly lit or night time situations. Additional stripes should be added to the arms and legs to increase safety especially when the clothing is to be worn near moving traffic or heavy machinery.  Stripes are generally 50mm wide and are often included in an x formation on the back.

Before purchasing a high viz vest or jacket, make sure to try the garment on for fit and comfort.  Consider when and where you will wear the item and in what type of weather.  The options are endless and many companies offer custom designs and the option to add logos or embroidery.
