Cars India – The Rules for Importing New Cars In India

The automobile industry in India is one of the largest and one of the fastest growing industries in the world. Today, India manufactures more than eleven million two wheelers and four wheelers, out of which more than one and half million of these are exported every year. It is said that India is the second largest manufacturer of motorcycles in the world with annual sales exceeding 8 million in the year 2009.

It is also believed that India’s commercial vehicle manufacturing and passenger car manufacturing industry is the world’s seventh largest. In the year 2009, India emerged as the fourth largest exporter of passenger cars in the whole of Asia.

India has an enormous market for imported luxury vehicles and there is a huge demand for new and second hand cars in the country. In the year 2001, the Exim Policy lifted quantitative restriction on car importations in India. Let us find out what are the rules and regulations surrounding the importation of Cars in India . According to rules set out by the Indian government, the import of cars shall be subject to the below mentioned guidelines.

A new car means that the car

– has not been made or assembled in India
– has never been sold prior to importing in India
– has not been registered in any other country for use

These are the conditions under which a new car can be imported.

The new car has:

– a speedometer which indicates the speed in km/h
– controls and steering is on the right hand side
– photometry of the headlamps
– been imported from the country where it was manufactured

Moreover, together with these conditions, the new vehicle must conform to the provisions laid out by the 1988 Motor Vehicles Act. There are other rules which had been made and must be followed along with the ones previously mentioned. These rules state that:

– The new car shall only be permitted through the various customs ports at Mumbai, Chennai and Calcutta.
