Maruti Swift, Swift Dzire, Ertiga and XUV 500 see waiting periods amid slow demand

Car makers in India might be worried over sluggish sales of their cars and might be thinking of ways to rev up car sales in India by doling out lucrative offers and chalking out remunerative plans to lure customers. Amid snail paced demand few of the cars in India have managed to maintain good monthly numbers and contributing towards the growth of their respective brand. These cars which are still topping the popularity charts are the best selling models of their respective segments and brands. These cars are Maruti Swift Dzire notchback, Maruti Swift hatchback, Maruti Ertiga and Mahindra XUV 500.

Maruti Suzuki India is at the top of the charts with three top selling models. Demand for these cars is at an all time high despite the sluggish sales. These cars also have a long waiting period, at a time when companies are thinking to slow down manufacturing of their cars, these models come with a high waiting period. The Executive officer International marketing, Maruti Suzuki India, Mr. Shashank Srivastava stated that the average monthly sales of Maruti Swift hatchback in India has gone up to 20,000 units a month. The hatchback was able to rope in 12,000 bookings on a monthly basis which has now spurt to 20,000 units a month.

The vehicle was launched in India in August last year and since then it has seen a surge in demand which is close to 8,000 units on monthly basis. In the same way, Maruti Swift Dzire sales in India has been doubled to 16,000 units a month. Another good seller from Maruti Suzuki India, Maruti Ertiga which was launched in India in the month of April has been able to garner bookings of 48,000 units. Maruti Ertiga has received an unprecedented response for the compact MPV, the company has already sold around 17,000 units until now. The accrued sales for Maruti Swift hatchback, Maruti Swift Dzire notchback and Maruti Ertiga compact MPV stood at 120,000 which accounted for 46 per cent of the total sales of Maruti Suzuki India in the first quarter of the financial year.

The most exciting thing about Maruti Swift hatchback is that despite the long waiting period, the customers are willing to wait for up to three months for the diesel version of the hatchback. While the waiting period for the Maruti Swift Dzire notchback is around four months. On the other hand, the waiting period for the high end version of Maruti Ertiga would extend to the beginning of the next year that is 2013.

The soaring demand for Mahindra XUV 500 in the domestic market has also led to ponder Mahindra about the export plans of the SUV in the overseas market. Pravin Shah,the chief executive officer, automotive segment stated that the company had initially decided to manufacture 2000 units of the SUV on monthly basis, however, with the surge in demand they are now going to ramp up the production to 5000 units a month. Since its launch in September the company opened bookings for three times. On June 8, the bookings were opened again for the third time and the company has received 18,500 bookings so far.

Since the launch of the SUV on September 29, 2012, the company has sold close to 22,000 units. The waiting period for the SUV ranges between two to five months across the country. The company’s share in the high end SUV segment with price ranging between Rs 10 lakh to Rs 12 lakh has risen from 41per cent to 57 per cent in comparison to last financial year. Also there has been an increase the first time buyers in the hatchback segment from 24 per cent to 46 per cent in last two year.
