Audi outpaces BMW India marginally in June sales

Audi India is riding high on success of its newly launched sports utility vehicle Audi Q3. On the back of Audi Q3 SUV Audi India has managed to outpace BMW in the luxury car segment in June 2012 sales. But BMW has defied Audi’s sales sating that Audi India’s sales figure that it reflects wholesale numbers and not the retail sales number.

As per the data collected from Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM), Audi has been able to surge its sales more than two times at 759 units in the month of June 2012 which is way too more than 354 units sold last year in the same month. BMW which has been reigning the luxury car segment of the Indian car market since March 2010 lost to Audi India in the June 2012 sales by meagre margin at 750 units sold last month. However, BMW posted highest accrued sales in the segment for the second quarter that ended in June with 2,088 units sold.

BMW on the other hand is saying that Audi India is emphasizing its sales number, BMW claims that Audi sold only 718units in the month of June 2012, however BMW sold 750 units. BMW says that the numbers given to SIAM by Audi India are the wholesales numbers. SIAM executives gave the all car makers reported wholesales numbers, leaving the confusion as it is.

Both the luxury companies have an entry level sports utility vehicle in their respective portfolios. BMW has BMW X1 compact SUV while Audi just launched its entry level compact SUV, Audi Q3 in the domestic market. BMW on the other hand has not launched any new product in India yet, however its upgraded BMW 3 Series is on brink of launching. BMW 3 Series Price is going to play a crucial role in the sedan’s success in India. If this is priced competitively, it could turn out to be another crucial volume puller product for BMW. However, BMW has been able to woo the customers so far with its old products in the offering say the industry experts. BMW X1 SUV base version comes with a price tag of Rs 22.5 lakhs. The SUV accounted for close to 30 per cent chunk in BMW’s sales last year which has gone down to 26 per cent this year.

Audi India so far has spawned facelift version of Audi A4 along with new Audi Q3 SUV which was launched in June 2012. Audi Q3 price starts at Rs 26 lakhs which is more than BMW X1 SUV. BMW India on the hand is claiming that the company has lined up four new products for the domestic market. Out of these two models, two will be completely new models which will be paving its way in the Indian car market.

Commenting on the success of Audi India’s performance, Michael Perschke, the head of Audi India said that factors like the company’s product offering, marketing strategy and stress on dealer expansion have led to this change. Audi India is now focusing at achieving a sales mark of 8,000 units a month which it should be able to achieve by the end of 2012. The luxury segment in India grew by 9 pre cent with 5,768 units sold in the first quarter of this financial year. However, the segment currently accounts for only one per cent of the total passenger car segment in India. The sales are expected to surge ten times at 200,000 units over the next decade.
