Pune, situated on the Deccan Plateau near the western coast, was earlier known as ‘Punya-Nagiri’ or ‘Queen of Deccan’. The Britishers called it Poona. Now it has got its original name Pune.

Pune, the eighth largest metropolis in India and the second largest city in Maharashtra, has a long history. The town got its name some time in the tenth century. But it was during the rule of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaja that Pune witnessed growth and development in every field.

Shrimant Dagduseth Halwai Ganpati Temple houses the most favourite deity of the city, the Ganesha. Osho Park is a great centre for meditation and rejuvenation. This park is frequented by large number of people throughout the year.

Pune boasts of the prestigious Film institute. This institute has produced large number of top class actors to Bollywood. Aga Khan Palace is one of the major attractions in Pune. This was the place where Mahatma Gandhi was imprisoned for participating in the ‘Quit India Movement’ in 1942.

Pune also has a Zoological Park named Rajiv Gandhi Zoological Park. Among other tourist attractions in Pune are Shaniwar Wada, Sinhgad Fort, Saras Baug (a park), Sadhu Vaasvani Mission and Katraj Jain Temple.

Pune, surrounded by verdant hills and beautiful lakes, is among the greenest urban areas in the country. Pune enjoys a pleasant climate but the best time to visit the city is during the winters. Pune is connected to all major cities in India by air, rail and road.
