Mahindra Scorpio up for a makeover, Duster effect?

The czar of the SUV segment, Mahindra & Mahindra achieved another landmark with its first product in the passenger and SUV segment, Mahindra Scorpio completing a successful decade in the Indian car market. The company’s vision had always been different and that is why despite of being surrounded by small cars the auto maker chose to go for a humongous vehicle which ten years ago was not that prevalent and was hardly seen on India roads. Mahindra had nerves to launch a SUV in a car souk which was dominated by hatchbacks and to everyone’s surprise the SUV managed to do extremely well. The SUV also underwent many changes every year which made it better with time, this muscular and mighty machine has ruled the hearts of the Indian customers for 10 long years and still has not been defeated by any of the new SUVs in India. With time things changed in the Indian car market too and customers’ interest shifted from hatchbacks and entry levels sedans to compact SUVs. With the sudden influx of compact SUVs in India which will soon make its way in the Indian car market, Scorpio is readying itself to fight out the competition.

Being an old player the SUV would not want to be defeated with the new gen SUVs. The first new gen compact SUV to be launched in India is Renault Duster which is not even a month old in the domestic and yet has been able to temp the customers. Launched in India on July 4th 2012, the SUV so far has been able to rope in 8000 bookings and we hear that the French auto maker is even thinking to ramp up the production of the SUV looking at the out stripping demand for the compact SUV in India.

Coming back to Mahindra Scorpio, the company is looking at giving a complete makeover to the SUV. The work on the SUV had even started at the company’s research and development facility in Chennai where engineers are working day and night to give a new look to the SUV. The SUV will undergo major facelift and will be rendered in the year 2014 so there is still time for the launch of new Mahindra Scorpio in India. Ten years ago the SUV had become a rage, launched with an introductory price of Rs lakhs only for the base variant the SUV managed to grab 1000 bookings within 10days of the launch. Mahindra Scorpio price if compared to Renault Duster, is quite similar and that is what could be matter of worry for the former.

Duster is an edgy SUV though it does not have jaw dropping looks, it looks plainer. However it scores well in the features department, packed with advanced technology the SUV is every bit a worth buy for the youth. Mahindra Scorpio is present only in diesel trim while Renault Duster is launched in both petrol and diesel variants. Therefore Duster has an upper hand here, while Scorpio is an old player and has been very popular among the customers in India, we are sure that the new version of the SUV will be smashing.

There are a lot of expectations with the new version of Mahindra Scorpio. The new addition in the portfolio of Mahindra, XUV 500 has swept away the competition with its looks, technology and features. The SUV within less than one year of launch has proved to be a complete stunner and a bestselling model in the SUV segment. Looking at this new SUV by Mahindra auto experts are hopeful that the new version of Scorpio will be way too better than the current version running on roads. For this we will have to wait until the launch happens in 2014 and see if the car maker lives up to everyone’s expectations.
