Dhanbad – The Coal Capital of India
Dhanbad is situated in the state of Jharkhand. Dhanbad is bounded on the west by Giridih and Bokaro, on the north by Giridih and Dumka and on the east and south by Purulia district of West Bengal.
The mining town of Dhanbad is internationally famous for its rich coal fields. Situated at a distance of 171 km from Jamshedpur, Dhanbad is an industrial and commercial town and has the distinction of having India’s richest coal fields. The Indian School of Mines is also located in the city of Dhanbad.
Other than the numerous coal fields, Dhanbad is also famous for its other sightseeing options.
Topchanchi Lake is located about 37 km from Dhanbad. This artificial lake was excavated along the slope of Parasnath Hill in 1915 to supply water to the surrounding villages. This lake attracts a lot of nature lovers to its quite and beautiful environment making it an important tourist spot.
Another historically important place is Gomoh where Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose boarded the train for his departure from India. To commemorate this incident, a statue of Netaji is installed here.
Maithon Dam, 52 km from Dhanbad has the biggest reservoir in Damodar Valley. This dam, designed for flood control, has been built on Barakar River. It has a unique underground power station which is first of its kind in Asia.
The lake at Maithon covers over an area of 65 sq km. On an island in the lake is a rest house which offers accommodation to the visiting tourists if booked in advance. Boating and fishing facilities are also available. People also come to enjoy the deer park. Nearby is a bird sanctuary that attracts a lot of migratory birds during winters. Near the dam lies an ancient temple of Kalyaneshwari.
Panchet Dam, constructed over Damodar River, is 22,155 ft long and 134 ft high. A hydel station has also been constructed.
Shakti Mandir is one of the most famous Hindu Temples in Dhanbad. Lilloristhan Mandir, an ancient temple of Goddess Kali, is situated on the bank of river Katri, 19 km from Dhanbad. Gopalpur, 20 km from Dhanbad, contains ancient structures built during the period of emperor Ashoka. A large stone image of emperor Ashok is also found here. Bhatinda Falls, 14 km from Dhanbad, draws lot of crowd.
Bokaro, India’s biggest steel plant, is 47 km from Dhanbad.
The nearest airports to Dhanbad are the ones in Ranchi, Gaya, Kolkata and Patna. Dhanbad has a very good rail connectivity with the other major parts of the country. Private and State buses are available for to Dhanbad from the neighbouring towns and states. National Highway 2 and National Highway 32 are the major highways passing through Dhanbad.
