Brogue: Make a Statement This Autumn

Men are becoming increasingly fashion conscious, and like women, now suffer a common ailment that stands in the way of looking good: how to know which shoes are trendy, and which are not. Shoes, as any fashion lover will tell you, make the outfit; unless you wear the right shoes for your clothes, in terms of colour and style, then whatever your outfit, it will always fall short.

There are a few styles of shoes, known as the ‘classics’, which suit most outfits. This information is invaluable for any fashionista. Among these shoes are brogues, and it is brogues that we will now take a closer look at, because if you own a pair of brogues, then you are on your way to fashion greatness, and here’s why.

  • They never go out of fashion. Perhaps one day they may, but as yet, the brogue has remained a shoe of choice for fashion loving men the world over. They are definitely the style of shoe for you if you want something that looks good, but you do not want to make too much effort.
  • They match the majority of outfits, whether smart or casual. They suit a nice, straight-leg, pair of jeans as much as they suit a, well, suit. There are a few exceptions to the rule, for instance, they would never go well with board shorts, and they certainly don’t match tracksuit bottoms, but in general, they do complete the any outfit.
  • There are styles within style. There are so many different colours to choose from, so many styles, and they come in a wide range of budgets – whether you are pulling the purse strings tight, or you are letting loose a little bit, you are sure to find a style of brogue that you love.

As stated, the brogue suits most styles of clothing, but just in case you are unsure about how to wear them, read on for some inspiration.

We love the rustic, old fashioned, town/country look that is popular this year. To pull this off, you need a pair of skinny, tapered, jeans, in a dark brown or faded black colour and turned up at the bottom. Thrown on a semi-casual shirt, in brushed or light cotton – go for an earthy colour, such as grey/purple, to match the autumn colours, and then throw on a tweed looking jacket or a man’s cardigan. To complete the outfit, get a large, oversized, males’ tote bag. Perfect for pounding the pavements of London or any other cosmopolitan city in fall. Remember that you need a pair of brogues too, with the outfit described here, a nice, earthy, semi-distressed colour is ideal.

This is just one example of the type of outfit that you can create around a pair of brogues, there are many more, and this is the exciting part: fashion is all about experimentation. If you are lucky enough to live in one of the more forward-thinking British cities, then experimenting with fashion will be the norm, lucky you, you get to wear any outfit as long as you pull it off with style.
