Fashions: What Goes Around Stomps Around

Brothel creepers; hardly the most fetching name for a shoe, is it? No, it lends to a rather weird pair of shoes, worn by professional stalkers come weirdo sex pest. This is not so, they do get their name from the fact that the step they produce is very quiet, and thus enables people to sneak around, however, their original intention was not to enable people to visit brothels unnoticed.

Rather, brothel creepers were originally a style of military shoe, originating in World War Two. They helped soldiers to navigate tricky terrain more easily. The elevated soles kept their feet from getting wet in some conditions, in other conditions, it prevented the feet from getting too hot, other times from getting too cold, etc. In short, the brothel creeper was the ATV of the footwear world during the Second World War.

The next time that we saw the brothel creepers were on the feet of the rebellious youth of the 1950s, most notably, the Teddy boys. They took the shoes as emblemise of their anti-establishment views at the time. Needless to say, they grew up and took work as finance directors, lawyers and advertising executives. Next time we saw the creepers, it was on the feet of the new rebellious youth, the punk rockers – how silly that they adopted the footwear of the people for which they fought against, the establishment, made up of, once, dizzy headed youth like them. Oh, year, the punks rocked these shoes up to high heaven. DM creepers were everywhere, stomping around to the Sex Pistols, and whoever else they listened too. The punks soon faded away, and many of them sold out too, they can now be found close to retirement, if not retired, from positions such as CEOS, company directors and the like…next, the creepers made their way onto the feet of the Goths, the ones who replaced the punks, who replaced the Teddy boys, as rebellious youth. Well, you know what happened next, the same thing that always happens; the Goths are now our bosses.

Well, guess what’s happening now? Yes, that’s right, creepers are back, and guess who’s wearing them? Yep, you’ve got it, it’s the anti-establishment youth. It’s the Jessie J’s, it’s the Cher Lloyds, it’s the boisterous, over opinionated, soon to sell out, youth. That’s not to say that a pair of creepers doesn’t look fantastic, because they do.

Creepers suit a massive range of styles, but to pull them off, you have to remember one thing. You have to do it with attitude, come one, you are the 99%, and you love creepers. Wear them proudly, and then try not to sell out this time, try to change the world for the better, but in the meantime, enjoy the wonderful expression of fashion that creepers give. These shoes will definitely turn heads, they have such an unusual look, and they come in such vibrant and interesting styles. They are, in short, fantastic.
