Amazon officially took the wraps off of three new Kindle Fire HDs at a press event today inSantaMonica,Calif., (in addition to an updated version of the Kindle Fire, sans HD). There’s the Fire HD with the 7-inch screen that will sell for $199, and an8.8mmthick Fire HD with an 8.9-inch screen starting at $299 for 16GB and $369 for 32GB. There’s also an extra-fancy Fire HD with AT&T’s4GLTE support priced at $499 for 32GB and $599 for 64GB.

Of course, there are differences among the three new tablets. All the Fire HD devices boast an IPS display, and the non-4Gversions both harbor 16GB of onboard memory. Amazon hopes that4GLTE, 32GB of storage, and a $50 yearly data plan with access to 250MB of data every month will be worth $499. To sweeten the “deal,” Amazon is throwing in 20GB of cloud storage and $10 of app store credit.

Apart from the fact that 250MB is a pitiful monthly data allowance — even for such a cheap monthly price of $4 plus change — we’re not convinced that it’s a compelling enough package for a $500 Kindle Fire HD LTE.

Amazon Kindle Fire HD and Kindle Paperwhite are available for pre-order beginning Thursday and is expected for delivery as early as Sept. 14. The new tablet comes in several varieties. There is a 1920×1200, 1080p HD 8.9 inch display with dual-band, dual-antenna Wi-Fi and Bluetooth technology, but also a large display including4GLTE capabilities. The 7 inch model comes with a 1280×800 display with 720p HD, dual-band, dual-antenna Wi-Fi, and Bluetooth technology. Both WiFi models come in 16GB or 32GB options. The Kindle Fire HD with4GLTE comes in 32GB or 64GB options, all models including the free cloud storage for Amazon content.

The original Amazon Kindle Fire was also updated with longer battery life, double the memory space, and 40% faster performance. The price was also lowered to $159.00 and is available for pre-order on Amazon.

Kindle Paperwhite features sharper E-Ink. “We’ve added 62% more pixels and increased contrast by 25%, so whites are whiter, and blacks are blacker,” Amazon founder & CEO, Jeff Bezos, wrote on the Amazon.com.

Paperwhite features a built-in light on the front of the device and also comes in a3Gmodel. The original Kindle was updates with new fonts and 15% faster page turns.

An advanced true wide polarizing filter and omni-directional, full spectrum color make the display look great from every angle, and a touch sensor laminated to the display rather than simply being stacked on top of it means a sharper image, better contrast and 25 percent less glare, according to Bezos.

A new HD front-facing camera supports Skype integration, and also provides a handy way to tell when the Kindle Fire HD is upside-down, since there are no physical buttons on the front bezel (volume and lock controls are on the side of the device).

An HD tablet isn’t complete without HDMI out, and the Kindle Fire HD sports bluetooth as well.

All that would be meaningless if the Kindle Fire HD didn’t pack a punch, and under the hood you’ll find the TI OMAP 4470 processor, 16GB of storage (vs. the Kindle Fire’s 8GB), new dual stereo speakers with Dolby Digital Plus, and two dual-band 2.4 and 5GHz Wi-Fi antennas for more consistent and speedier connections.
