How To Choose The Right Bar Stool

I just love a kitchen or casual space with bar stools. They are one of the most versatile pieces of furniture that I know of. You can choose a style that makes your home look cutting edge contemporary, or go with an old British Pub style create a cozy comfortable ambiance. And I also love the fact that they are not just for kitchens. Bar stools add character to just about any room of your house, inside or out.

First figure out where you think you might want to add the charm and character of a set of bar stools. Once you’ve chosen the location, then you must decide upon a style or theme. Do you want to go with the classic wooden swivel stool with a back, or go for an all chrome round diner style. Today there is such a large range of styles to choose from you will definitely find a style to suit your decor.

Once you have the theme worked out, then you need to decide what height your bar or table will be, so that you can then choose the appropriately sized bar stools. The standard bar stool height is 30″. This is sized to fit appropriately with the standard bar height of 42″ (or 40-44 inches). However you may decide that your kitchen is more suited for a breakfast bar height counter, in which case you will want to find a style available in the 24 inch height.

Once you have determined the appropriate height of the stools you can then consider other characteristics such as the structure of the stool. The two main structural elements to consider is a) whether the stool will have a back and b) whether the seat will swivel. Bar stool with backs are far more comfortable than bar stools without backs. When deciding if a back is needed consider the length of time someone might be expected to sit at the stool. Having a swivel seat bar stool can be convenient but is a luxury.

The final bar stool aspect to consider is what type of material will be used in the construction of the stool and whether you want the stool to be upholstered. The old fashioned stools were generally made from hard wood and heavily varnished. These are handsome barstools but perhaps a bit heavy looking for residential use. These days bar stools are made from wood, resin, poly carbonate and formed plastic.

These days bar stools almost come in as many different shapes forms and styles as regular chairs. Take your time and think carefully about what you want out of the stool and the placement of the stool. A well placed bar stool or two can add a great deal of interest to your room.
