Different Styles of Furniture

The history of man is in complete synchronization with the evolution of architecture and other related arts like in the field of music and visuals.  For every age of man, there is a corresponding architectural style and for every architectural style there is corresponding furniture style.

The different eras and styles of architecture have now merged into what is labeled as Neo-House styles and present-day Modern House styles. Furniture designs have evolved too as in general they can be divided into: traditional, transitional, country, coastal, Tuscan, Southwestern, modern and contemporary. These styles are common in the United States.

Traditional style furniture are the classics: Renaissance, Louis XIV, Louis XVI, Victorian and Colonial. The furniture are characterized by dark and richly finished wood with very elaborate carvings. Asian furnishings can be grouped under this category too.  This style is quite formal and your antiques will be perfect accessories for this type of interior design.

Transitional style is a mixture of traditional and contemporary furniture. The style is somewhat eclectic as it’s casual and cozy. Transitional furniture have neutral colors and a fine example of this is the Adams Morgan Loveseat by Abbyson with its curving backrest and its contemporary fabric upholstery on dominantly streamlined silhouette.

Country style is all about wood and arts and crafts. The style is quite informal and laid back.   Country style could also be rustic as you picture a cabin by the lake with the walls decorated with fish hooks and hunting trophies.

Coastal style is more down-to earth and is more aptly represented by blues and whites.   Light furniture are preferred as the concept of a coastal interior design is for a light and airy ambiance. The Riviera Square Coffee Table would be right at home in this set-up.

Tuscan is all about sun-kissed earth and a reflection of the beauty of the Italian countryside.  The style is warm and welcoming with furniture in wrought iron and marvelous stone finishing.  To grace your indoor or outdoor Tuscan-style home bar or kitchen counter, choose the Florence Contemporary Barstool by Caluco. The counter stool is available in different canvas colors and stripes that would suit any color scheme.

Southwestern style is cactus greens, terra cotta pinks and reds, burnt siennas and turquoise blues. Textured fabrics for upholstery are dominant so are distress- finished pine furniture

The more popular styles of furniture today are the contemporary and modern.  Contemporary style is light, bright and airy. Lines are streamlined and none of those intricate and carving lines.  Color is more on the neutrals but the addition of bright splashes here and there are encouraged.  Metal, leather and fabrics are dominant in furniture designs. Some recommended living room furniture are the Marmaris Designer Chair by SohoConcept and the Full Time Contemporary Sofa By Antidiva. The fine uncluttered lines of these furniture are classic examples of contemporary furniture.

Modern or Moderne style is differentiated from Contemporary as the style started in the 1930s steaming out of the Bauhaus School of Design in Germany and later from the Scandinavian design concept. Contemporary is what is current. However the line between what is Contemporary and what is Modern is slightly vague as the two styles are interchangeable.  Modern style has a neutral color palette, geometric lines, smooth and square and none of those “boxy” and curvaceous silhouettes.  Typical examples are Recanati Modern Dining Table – which seem to be straight from the Bauhaus drawing board – and the Le Corbusier Three Seater Sofa – so aptly named after the Father of Modern Design.
