How to Choose a Laptop
When looking to buy a new laptop PC, you want to find a balance between price and features. Top of the line laptops come with high-end price tags, and budget notebooks might not give you all you want. It takes some searching, but it’s almost always possible to find a laptop that fits your need, and is within your price range.
If you’re looking for a laptop for work or school, you really don’t need a powerhouse CPU or high-end video card, because word processing and similar programs aren’t that intensive on the computer. Nearly any laptop you find will serve in this capacity fine, and you shouldn’t have to worry about it not meeting the requirements to run basic software such as Microsoft Word or OpenOffice.
A good work or school laptop should be selected considering a few criteria: You want it to have a decent sized hard drive, at least 250GB, so you’ll have plenty of space to store all your documents. You also want to find a screen size that is comfortable for you. Some people prefer larger screens for the amount of space available to work in, but some prefer the portability of smaller screens. The average screen size for many laptops is around 15 inches diagonal, which suits most people fine. Finally, you want to make sure the laptop has plenty of USB ports, or card readers if you plan on storing files on flash drives or cards.
If you want a gaming laptop, you’ll most likely pay more for that privilege, unless you play really old games. For this use, you want a laptop with a good video card from Nvidia or AMD, rather than integrated video. The laptop should also have plenty of RAM, (around 3 or 4 gigabytes) and a good dual or quad-core CPU. A decent gaming laptop doesn’t have to break the bank, and some very good performers can be found under $700.
A laptop for watching movies has similar requirements to a gaming laptop, although not quite as extreme. You still want to stay away from integrated graphics, but you don’t need the best video card either. A large hard drive (over 500GB) is a must if you plan on storing HD movies on the laptop, or recording television. You might also want to look for a laptop with a Blu-ray player built in, and a screen with at least a 1080p (1920×1080) resolution for watching full HD.
If all you want to do with your laptop is surf the web, you my instead opt for a netbook, which is a mini-laptop built specifically for internet use. These netbooks are usually cheaper than regular laptops, but they are also smaller and less powerful. Otherwise, most any laptop is suitable for browsing the web.
The right laptop doesn’t have to cost a fortune, and as long as you search with your specific needs in mind, its easy to get a great notebook for a low price. Consider your requirements and eliminate those laptops that fall outside your price range, and begin comparing the rest based on features relevant to what you want to do with it. Soon, you’ll be left with a laptop that fits you perfectly.
