Requirements for Singapore Working Permit
Working in Singapore can bring about a number of advantages and benefits. However, before you can work legally in Singapore, you must first obtain a working permit. There are various working permit schemes available for a foreigner who wish to find employment in Singapore.
The various schemes for a working permit, professional employment category, in Singapore are the following:
- Employment Pass (EP)
- Entrepreneur Pass (EntrePass)
- S Pass
- Personalized Employment Pass (PEP)
Employment Pass (EP)
An EP is the working permit issued to company owners or skilled employees who will be working in Singapore. A fixed monthly salary is required and must be more than S$2,500. Also, it is required that the applicant is a degree holder from a reputable university. However, in lieu of a degree or diploma, possessing a strong professional work experience history and good salary may also make an applicant eligible to apply for an EP. An EP has 3 categories: P1, P2, and Q1. An EP is not granted by virtue of a quota system so there is no limit to the number of EP that can be issued.
Entrepreneur Pass (EntrePass)
A variation of an Employment Pass, an EntrePass is the primary type of working permit or pass for owners of newly incorporated (or to be incorporated) Singapore companies who wish to relocate to Singapore to operate their new business. Just like an EP, EntrePass has three categories: P1, P2, and Q1 and requires a fixed monthly salary of more than S$2,500. An EntrePass is essential if the foreigner needs to relocate to Singapore in order to personally manage the operations of the new company. It is likewise not issued under a quota system.
S Pass
An S Pass is the working permit for mid-skilled employees who earn a fixed monthly salary of at least $1,800. Unlike the EP and EntrePass, S Pass applicants are assessed based on employer’s quota eligibility and applicant’s qualifications. For this type of work pass, a diploma for technical skills acceptable instead of a degree.
Personalized Employment Pass (PEP)
A PEP is a special type of Employment Pass that is not tied to a specific employer. However, under this type of work pass, the applicant cannot start or form his own company. This means that he has to be employed only by a third-party employer. In case you have to change jobs, you need not apply for a new employment pass, but you are allowed to switch jobs provided you are not unemployed for a period not longer than 6 months. Under this working permit scheme, no quota system is being applied but the application is evaluated based on every applicant’s qualifications and skills.
