Guide on How to Build a good Resume
Ever wondered what happens to your resume after you make a job application?
You probably expected that it goes straight to the company where you made the application, but actually that is usually not the case. It goes to a company, agency, or outsourced recruiter. So the actual decision on whether you get the interview really lies with the recruiter in the first instance. It’s entirely up to them whether you get called in for an interview with the hiring manager or if your resume simply gets tossed into the trash. The recruiter is the person of who makes the decisions on who are the few individuals who actually make it to the next stage by being offered an interview.
Of course, this recruiter only has one method to decide if you’re qualified for the job. That is your resume.
Recruiters come in all shapes and sizes; some are managers, some are junior generalists, some recruit part time in a human resources department, and others recruit full time independently. No matter that particular situation, each recruiter has their own idiosyncracies which can make the whole process seemed almost arbitrary. When you talk to one alone it seems as though they evaluate resumes by feel, by their gut. But when you talk to a lot of recruiters you begin to realize that there are patterns in their opinion. In actual fact, if you interview a large number of professional recruiters you will find that there is indeed a very specific set of rules that they all follow.
In fact, it turns out that these rules are different from the advices you receive on how to build a resume.
Most recruiters are frustrated by the low quality of most of the resumes they receive. In fact, only 5% of resumes submitted to top companies are considered excellent. People just don’t seem to get it! The challenge is that while great recruiters know exactly what they want to see and how they want to see it, it’s not their job to help you fix your resume.
So you’re left with generic online templates, cut-rate ‘certified resume preparers’, and blind luck to have success with your resume. Most resume books come from either resume professionals with no recruitment experience or from one person who worked long term at one company.
