Features Of Single Speed Bikes
A single speed bike is a bicycle with a constant gear ratio, i.e., its gear ratio cannot be changed by using methods like hub gearing and derailleur gears. It is used mainly for commuting purposes.
Cruiser type bicycles, BMX bicycles, unicycles, track racing bicycles, classic commuter bicycles, fixed gear mountain bicycles, and fixed gear road bicycles are some types of single speed bikes.
A single speed bike has several advantages over its multi-geared counterpart. For one, it is much simpler, lighter, and cheaper. It also has fewer components that require maintenance, and its drivetrain efficiency is higher. A straight chainline, lack of chainings, pins, and ramps, and a lack of chain drag due to the absence of derailleur jockey pulleys in the rear make single speed bikes more efficient.
The main disadvantage of a single speed bike is that due to a single gear ratio, this bike cannot be pedaled outside the single gearing range. Its top speed is also limited by the single gear ratio. On a descending or flat terrain, once the bicycle speed crosses a certain threshold, you will be unable to maintain progressive increases in the cadence, i.e., pedaling revolutions per minute. These factors combine to make the single speed bike slower and less versatile than its multi-geared equivalent.
Single speed bikes are engineered to create and maintain an appropriate amount of chain tension using various methods such as track ends or horizontal rear dropouts. These methods let the rear wheel move forward and backward as required.
As they are designed for simplicity, these bikes usually have no suspension or they have front suspension forks. This is due to the fact that rear suspension requires a sprung chain tensioner to maintain the right amount of tension, thereby increasing the potential for complexity.
A single speed bike also has a belt-driving mechanism, which improves its wear resistance, and provides quieter operation. This mechanism also maintains bicycle cleanliness without the need for a lubricant. However, belt-driven bikes are less popular than chain-driven ones due to their lower efficiency as compared to the latter.
There are various types of single speed bike available in the market. The fixed-gear speed bicycle is the most common type of single speed bike. It comes in two types: a light and fast road-bike and a robust mountain bike. Both types are reliable and durable, and hence highly favored by bicycle messengers.
Some bicycles like road bicycles, cyclocross bicycles, hybrid bicycles, and mountain bicycles may not always be single speed, but they can be redesigned to have single speeds.
Bikes designed for trail typically have lower, slower gear ratios than those designed for road. Hence, they are better at handling gradients and obstacles. This requires you to be fitter and more adept at covering the terrain, as compared to the average biker.
Different types of single speed bike are becoming increasingly popular. Bicycle manufacturers are coming up a variety of models, and with a little planning and research, you can find one that is right for you.
