The name Mysore is a derivation of the name ‘Mahishuru’ which means the abode of Mahisha. Legends tell us that the demon Mahishasura (buffalo demon) was slain by Goddess Chamundeshwari. Mysore owns a rich cultural heritage and was ruled by the Wodeyars. It was ruled by other prominent leaders like Hyder Ali and his son Tipu Sultan. After the fall of Tipu Sultan, Mysore state was divided between the Madras presidency and the Nizam of Hyderabad.
The Second largest city in the state of Karnataka, Mysore, is located fairly near to its capital city, Bangalore. Located at the base of the Chamundi Hills, Mysore is spread over an area of about 129 square km.
Following a devastating famine that struck Mysore in 1876-77, the Wodeyars took over the reign of Mysore and soon under illustrious leaders like Krishnaraja IV, and his dewan, Sir M Vishweshwariah, Mysore began to prosper once again.

Other attractions in and around Mysore include Brindavan Gardens (famous for its musical fountains) at Krishna Raja Sagar Dam, Tipu Sultan’s Palace, Jaganmohan Palace and Art Gallery, St. Philomena’s Church, Lalit Mahal Palace, Datta Peetham, Karanji Kere, Mysore Zoo and the famous Chamundi Hills, to list a few.
There are numerous items that are associated with, and exclusive to Mysore like Mysore paintings, Mysore Malliage, Mysore Pak (a sweet), the Mysore Peta (a traditional turban made from silk) and the world famous Mysore silk saris, to list a few. A soap exclusively made from 100% pure sandalwood oil (the one of its kind in the whole world) named Mysore Sandal Soap is also a contribution of Mysore to the world.
As per the 2010 census, Mysore has been named the second cleanest city in the country besides being the cleanest city of Karnataka.
Mysore is also situated in the vicinity of numerous other tourist destinations like Shivanasamudra, Shravanabelagola, Dharmasthala, Nagarhole National Park, Kabini Forest Reserve, Wayanad and Ooty among others.
Mysore is also known for its cuisine consisting of the South Indian fare like masala dosa, set-dosa, rava or semolina dosa, bonda, bajji, thatte idlis, uppittu, puri palya, uthapam, vada sambar, Vangibath, chitranna, puliyoigrae, bisibelebath, and kesari bath, to name a few.
