An eco-tourism destination, Bhandardara draws in thousands of tourists to it every year. The most significant attractions of Bhandardara are the Bhandardara Lake and the Randha Waterfalls among others.
Bhandardara is a small town placed in the Ahmednagar in the state of Maharashtra. Located at a distance of about 185 km from the state capital of Mumbai, Bhandardara is a picturesque location set on the banks of the River Pravara. Bhandardara is particularly known for its natural beauty and its calm and peaceful environments.
As per Hindu mythological tales, it was at Bhandardara that the Sage Agastya (also referred to as Agasti oftentimes) prayed to God for over a year without even eating anything. Pleased with his dedication and devotion, The Lord gifted Agastya with a stream of River Ganga. It is believed that River Pravara is that river, which was gifted to Agastya.
Another attraction of Bhandardara is the Mount Kalsubai, which is the tallest peak (measuring in 5,400 ft) of Maharashtra state. Mount Kalsubai, which surrounds the village of Bhandardara, offers ample opportunities for adventure sport activities like trekking and mountaineering among others.
Some other attractions in and around Bhandardara are the Ratangad Fort and Harishchandragad Fort, to list a few. Of these, the Ratangad Fort is around 200 years old. Panoramic view of the Bhandardara village can be seen from the Ratangad Fort. The Harishchandragad Fort was built around the 6th century, when the Kalchuri Dynasty ruled over the region.
The Wilson Dam situated in Bhandardara provides with examples of the high engineering skills of the ancient times. Built in the year 1910 across River Pravara, the Wilson Dam is situated at a height of 150 m above sea level and is one of the oldest dams of the country. The Wilson dam also serves as a major source for hydro power generation in Bhandardara. Other attractions in the vicinity of Bhandardara are the Arthur Lake and the Umbrella Falls, both of which offer magnificent views. Ghatghar and Agastya Rishi Ashram are some other prominent tourist destinations of Bhandardara.
Bhandardara is also a spot that is popular for angling. Tourists who visit the place can spot numerous large fish over here. Though the tourists can go angling, no boats are allowed in Bhandardara.
Though replete with many attractions, Bhandardara is mostly known for its green spaces, open lands and unparalleled natural beauty. Bhandardara offers unpolluted air and is yet to experience high commercialization. It is the adventure options, natural settings and unpolluted air of that has attracted tourists to Bhandardara.
Bhandardara is located near to Nashik, which is easily accessible by road. Even though Bhandardara does not have a railway station, it is well connected to other cities of the state by road.
