BTEC Teaching Assistant Qualifications

It is still possible to get a job as a teaching assistant without any formal qualifications, but more and more schools are insisting that the staff they take on have a Teaching Assistant qualification. Many schools are also asking their existing un-qualified teaching assistants to go out and get the relevant qualification. They want to be able to prove easily and quickly that the people teaching and working in their school are qualified and can teach to a high standard. As a result getting a Teaching Assistant qualification before you start your job search makes a lot of sense.

The BTEC teaching assistant course is a great course to give you all of the skills you need to become a teaching assistant. It is a widely recognised qualification, so will help potential employers to see you in a positive light. You can take the course as a home study course, and most people complete the course within 180 hours. On-line and telephone support is provided throughout the entire course.

To successfully complete the BTEC Teaching Assistant course you need to be numerate and literate. A lot of the work you will do as a teaching assistant involves common sense, but you still need to be able to present your knowledge in writing to demonstrate that you are capable of working well within the classroom.

During the teaching assistant course, you will learn to provide day-to-day support for teaching staff and children. This support includes preparing lesson plans, delivering elements of that lesson plan and evaluating how well the children have learnt the contents of that lesson plan.

As a teaching assistant working with members of the public, you need to be aware of health and safety laws and several other areas of the law. The BTEC teaching assistant course will teach you about the areas of the law you need to be aware of and what your responsibilities are.

You need to have passed GCSEs, or have either a NVQ Level 1 or GNVQ Foundation certificate to qualify to take the BTEC Teaching Assistant course. You also need to be at least 16 years old.
